Infection control & PPE

Standard precautions apply to every patient, every time. Hand hygiene is the single most effective tool we have.

The five moments for hand hygiene

  • Before touching a patient
  • Before a clean or aseptic procedure
  • After body-fluid exposure risk
  • After touching a patient
  • After touching patient surroundings

PPE selection

  • Gloves — any contact with blood, body fluids, mucous membranes
  • Gown — splash, spray, or extensive contact risk
  • Mask + eye protection — splash or aerosol risk
  • N95 + eye protection — airborne precautions
  • Don in order: gown, mask, eyewear, gloves. Doff in reverse.

Stay home when you are sick

Fever, vomiting, productive cough, or rash: do not come in. Notify your supervisor before your shift starts. Coming in sick endangers patients and triggers a contact-tracing review.
