Infection control & PPE
Standard precautions apply to every patient, every time. Hand hygiene is the single most effective tool we have.
The five moments for hand hygiene
- Before touching a patient
- Before a clean or aseptic procedure
- After body-fluid exposure risk
- After touching a patient
- After touching patient surroundings
PPE selection
- Gloves — any contact with blood, body fluids, mucous membranes
- Gown — splash, spray, or extensive contact risk
- Mask + eye protection — splash or aerosol risk
- N95 + eye protection — airborne precautions
- Don in order: gown, mask, eyewear, gloves. Doff in reverse.

Fever, vomiting, productive cough, or rash: do not come in. Notify your supervisor before your shift starts. Coming in sick endangers patients and triggers a contact-tracing review.
